The effect of CBT on depression and somatic complaints in Multiple Sclerosis patients

The main purpose of this research was to study the effect of CBT on depression and somatic complaints of patients with MS. The research uses the experimental design. The sample consists of 28 patients (14 male, 14 female) who were selected and placed randomly in the experimental and control groups. Both groups were assessed in two stages, pre-test and post-test, by SCL90-R. The interval between the pre-test and post-test was 6 weeks, while the experimental group received intervention (Group-CBT) during this time as weekly sessions. The study indicates that CBT significantly decreased the depression?s symptoms (Ps<0.01) in the experimental group rather than control group, but had no significant effects on physical complaints. As a useful method of intervention, CBT could be applied for MS patients with depression along with other neurological treatments. http://www.usm.my/education/ICSWS/Programme.htm
